Sanitary Air Operated Diaphragm Pumps (MPFF series)
The MPFF air operated diaphragm pump is the food-grade version of the MPF series: made from electropolished stainless steel, with Hytrel/PTFE diaphragms, free of dead centres and with a lubricant-free air valve system. It complies with the FDA directive and EU Regulation (EC) No. 1935/2004 and is suitable for viscous foods with a high solids content.
Air Operated Diaphragm Pumps for the Food Sector
Air operated diaphragm pumps for the food sector are ideally suited to transferring viscous liquids and liquids with a high solids content. Their major advantage is that the liquid being handled is not subjected to the high shear forces of a centrifugal pump. Air operated diaphragm pumps are dry-run resistant, dry self-priming and infinitely adjustable.
Operating Principle
The central elements of an air operated diaphragm pump are two diaphragms moved by compressed air. These diaphragms are connected by a rod, which in turn is moved by an air valve in the centre of the pump. The pumping process takes place in two phases, running in opposite directions on either side of the pump:
- Suction phase: One diaphragm is pushed outwards by compressed air, creating a vacuum on the fluid side. This draws the liquid through the inlet valve into the pressure chamber.
- Discharge phase: At the same time, the second diaphragm moves inwards and forces the liquid out of the pump outlet through the discharge valve.
The MPFF series is additionally free of dead centres and features a lubricant-free air valve system, which reliably ensures both continuous and intermittent operation.
Materials and Standards
The pumps meet all requirements of the FDA directive and EU Regulation (EC) No. 1935/2004 on materials and articles intended to come into contact with food.
The MPFF series air operated diaphragm pump is made from electropolished stainless steel. The diaphragms consist of a material combination of Hytrel and PTFE. Depending on the application in the food and pharmaceutical sector, various other materials are available for all wetted components.
Fields of Application
- Confectionery and preserves: syrup, jam and fruit purée
- Dairy products: yoghurt and other viscous milk products
- Sauces and dressings: mayonnaise and other emulsified products
- Pasta and dough products: viscous masses with a high solids content
- Other suspensions in the food industry

Frequently Asked Questions about Sanitary Air Operated Diaphragm Pumps
Are the MPFF pumps approved for direct food contact?
Yes, they comply with the FDA directive and EU Regulation (EC) No. 1935/2004 on materials intended to come into contact with food.
Can highly viscous foods with a solids content also be handled?
Yes, this is one of the core strengths of the air operated diaphragm pump – it handles viscous and solids-laden media gently, without the shear forces typical of centrifugal pumps.
Is the MPFF also available for chemical rather than food applications?
For chemical applications we recommend the air operated diaphragm pumps of the standard MPF series.
