Air operated diaphragm pumps of the MPF series have established themselves as a reliable and versatile solution for transferring a wide variety of liquids. They are ideally suited to handling abrasive media with a high solids content or elevated viscosity. These dry-run resistant pumps can also be used in processes where the pump has to be emptied completely. Further fields of application include processes in which sensitive liquids must be transferred gently.
Operating Principle
The central elements of an air operated diaphragm pump are two diaphragms moved by compressed air. These diaphragms are connected by a rod, which in turn is moved by an air valve in the centre of the pump. The pumping process takes place in two phases, running in opposite directions on either side of the pump:
- Suction phase: One diaphragm is pushed outwards by compressed air, creating a vacuum on the fluid side. This draws the liquid through the inlet valve into the pressure chamber.
- Discharge phase: At the same time, the second diaphragm moves inwards and forces the liquid out of the pump outlet through the discharge valve.
This process is repeated continuously, with the diaphragms working alternately to produce a steady, slightly pulsating flow.
